Natural forests in the Federal Republic of Germany and Central Europe disappeared. Since 1970, the federal German states successively designated natural forests or near-natural forests as natural forest reserves. By 1982, except Hesse, a total of 350 protected areas were set up, most of them 10-20 hectares each, only 6 more than 100 hectares and 75 less than 10 hectares. All protected areas are protected by the relevant state laws and regulations such as the Forest Law, Natural Protection Law and Forestry Policies and Notices. In order to strengthen the research on natural forests, in 1979, the “Outline of Scientific Research on Natural Forest Reserves” was drafted in the fields of forestry, botany, soil science, regional zoology, forest sites and history.
