The Hong Kong Volunteer Group Neighborhood Association recently conducted a survey on the livelihoods of scavengers living in Hong Kong over the age of 60 and found that most of their income came from picking up cardboard boxes and soda cans. The survey was conducted in Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po District. Investigators collected 37 of the more than 370 scavengers who went in and out of waste paper collection shops daily. Surveys show that the elderly scavenge mainly to earn more money, followed by forced by life, money is the most worrying thing in their lives. Nearly 70% of the scavenged elderly people earn less than 400 Hong Kong Dollars and 40% of the elderly spend less than 1,500 Hong Kong dollars per month, reflecting the hardships scavengers live in. 70% of the elderly people interviewed are over 70 years of age.
