At 7:30 in the morning, a black Mercedes stopped at the gate of Zurich International Airport. Percy Barnevik, the president of Swedish ABB Company, got off and walked straight to his British Aerospace 128 jet. He is ready to fly to Rome. Today, like most of the previous days, the best place to meet Banewick is his air office. He explained in his regular parade, “If you are a stateless company, you cannot sit in an ivory tower.” He did not do this. His company is headquartered in Zurich, but the company’s Swedish, Swiss and German managers do not work at headquarters. The company’s business is done in the United Kingdom, but the accounts are all settled in U.S. dollars. Barnevik’s company can be said to be the representative of the emerging “stateless company.”
