从元代开始在汉籍中频繁出现的“罗罗”、“绿瓢”与“秋狐”始终同华夏边缘的彝语支族群纠缠在一起。不可否认,所谓“蛮人老则化虎”的传说有着潜在的传播路线,这是江南汉族移民向中西部地区不断拓展的结果。作为祖灵的“虎神”能够庇护子孙后代的观念,在东亚文化圈的动物精怪故事和神鬼信仰中很容易找到“反证”。笔者推测,诸多野兽变外婆吃小孩的故事是对远古时代真实存在过的“弃老习俗”的某种追忆,尽管其内容太过于荒诞不经,但也部分地折射出游猎民族对祖灵的极端恐惧心理。
