正当蒋介石全力“围剿”革命根据地和工农红军的时候,日本帝国主义就乘机发动九·一八事变,随即武装占领了我国东北的全部领土。当时全中国铁路14,400多公里,其中东北地区6,300多公里,约占全国的44%。随着东北领土的被占,这6,300多公里的铁路中,除早已由日本直接占有的南满铁路和安奉铁路干支线约1,130公里外,其余约5,200多公里的铁路也一并落入日本之手(其中包括中苏共管的中东铁路1,700多公里,也在1935年被日本从苏联方面强买过去)。
