Abstract:GrahamSwiftisregardedasoneofthemosthighlyrenownednovelistswritingincontemporaryBritain.Writtenin1996,LastOrdershasbeenawardedacoupleofrenownedprizesandoftenconsideredasSwift’sbest.AccordingtoBakhtin,dualityistheessenceofallofthecarnivalimages,presentingacontradictoryanddouble-facedfullnessoflifewithinthemselves.Asthecentercharacterofthisnovel,abundantdualityispowerfullymanifestedinJack.

1.Introduction
ThebutcherJackArthurDodds,tallandwell-built,isthecenterandmotiveofthejourneyfromLondontoMargate.Itisexactlyhisdeaththatinitiatesthisjourney,duringwhichtheothercharactersreflectivelyponderovertheirrelationshipsandpersonalissuesonlifeanddeath.Consideringnarrativestyleandhisphysicalbody,Jackisbothdeadandalive.Inthemeantime,hispresenceislimitedbytheregulationsofhisprofessionasabutchery,contrastingwithhishinderedaspirationsforphysicians.
2.AmbivalentNarrationandJack’sPhysicalBody
Intermsofthenarrationofthestory,Jack’swifeandhisclosestconfidants’recollectionsofhimoccupynearlyhiswholelifestoryexceptahalf-pagenarrationbyhimself.“Jack’ssubstantialityindeathcontrastsdramaticallywiththewraithlikesubjectivitydiscerniblefromhisonenarrativeintervention”(Lea174).Fromthesolehalf-pageofhisownaccount,welearnvirtuallynothingaboutJack’mentalrealmdirectlyfromhiswordsbutthethemeofiniquityofwastage,whichispasseddownfromhisfather.EventhoughJackisdeadatthebeginningofthestory,heisnotdeadatall,butpowerfullyexistsinthememoriesofothercharacters,thusrevealinghisactivities.
Intermsofhisphysicalbody,heismissingaswellaschangingintopartoftheirexistence.Jack’sashespenetratedeepintothewholestoryfromthefirstchaptertothelast,bearingthesymbolofJack’spresenceandattainingasensethathistinyparticlesalwaysaccompanyingtheothercharactersduringthejourney.Jackisonthebrinkofdeathandreborn,justasRaysaysattheMargatepierwhentheyarescatteringhisasheswiththebeatingofthespray.“...theashthatIcarriedinmyhands,...,iswhirledawaybythewindtilltheashbecomeswindandthewindbecomesJackwhatwe’remadeof”(Swift324).Everythingmeltsintoawholewiththeboundariesbeingblurred.ThoughJackisdeadinbody,hisashesassimilateintonatureandtransformintoanythingregenerative.
3.RegulatedButcheryvs.DesiredProfession
Withaparttoplay,Jackisdeterminedandlimitedbyhisprofessionandthentrappedincharacterforlife,owingtotheinfrangiblecontinuityoffamilybusiness.OnthestreetwhereSmithfieldsituates,thespotwhereJackworkseveryday,thereareahospitalandacentralcriminalcourt,allofwhichconcernstheflesh.However,hisextinguishedhopeisfarcicallyreturnedtoitsaffiliationwithbutchery.Jackcannotestrangehisrole-playingfromhisdesiredprofession,hisdisguisefromhistrueinnerbeing. Jackhasbeenhidinghiscravingforthemedicalprofession.“Asaparticipantandwitnessofthestrugglebetweenlifeanddeathintheinvalid’sbody,thephysician...playedanimportantpartinancientmedicine”(Bakhtin180).AccordingtoBakhtin,thephysicianisessentiallyconnectedwiththestruggleoflifeanddeathinthehumanbodyandhasaspecialrelationtochildbirthandthethroesofdeath.Participatingindeathandprocreation,thephysicianisnotconcernedwithacompletedandclosedbodybutwiththeonethatisborn,whichisinthestageofbecoming.
AnotherreasonlyingbehindhisdesireofbeingadoctorsignifiesJune.UnderJack,thereisarayofhoperemainingtohimthatthedoctorscouldonedayhaveanycurefordudbabies,withtheresultthatJunewouldbecuredsomedayandcometorecognizeherparentsifhechoosestobeadoctor,whichisJack’slong-timehope.Butironically,thereexistsnodreamlandornewlifeaheadofhim.Jackcouldnotshakeofftheimprisonmentoflifeandfixedpatternofthought--followinghisfather’sorderstotakeupbutcheryashislifelongprofession.
4.Summary
