Chronic brain and spinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) is a state of abnormal or obstructive venous return of the central nervous system. It is a newly recognized central nervous system vascular disease that is similar to the pathophysiological changes of venous insufficiency of the lower extremities . Abnormal cerebral venous blood flow of CCSVI triggers inflammatory reaction, leading to impaired venous barrier, iron deposition and enhanced immune and inflammatory responses, which may lead to pathological changes of white matter demyelination and may be one of the causes of multiple sclerosis. Recent research shows that the application of endovascular intervention of CCSVI is expected to become a new method for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
