The Father And His Sons
Father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarrelling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.
He next unclosed the faggot, and took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into their hands, on which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in these words: “My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks.”
A Little Horse Crossing the River
There were an old horse and a little horse on a farm. One day the old horse asked the little horse to send the wheat to the mill. The little horse was very happy. He carried the wheat and ran toward the mill. But there was a river in front of the little horse. He stopped and did not know what to do next. Just then Aunt Cow was passing by.
The little horse asked, “Aunt Cow, please tell me. Can I cross the river?”
Aunt Cow answered, “It is not deep, you can cross it.”
When the little horse began to cross the river, a little squirrel shouts at him, “Little horse, don’t cross it, you will be drowned. Yesterday one of my friends was drowned in this river.”
The little horse was very afraid. Finally he decided to go home and ask his mother.
The old horse asked, “Why do you take the wheat back? What’s wrong with you? My child.”
The little horse answered sadly, “There is a river in front of me. Aunt Cow said it was not deep. But the little squirrel said it was deep. What shall I do?”
The old horse said, “My child, you should try to cross the river by yourself. If you do not try, how do you know the river is deep or not?”
The little horse carried the wheat and returned to the riverside. At last, he succeed in crossing the river. Now, he knows how deep the river is.
