Yuan Longping has achieved another breakthrough as chief scientist in a rice crop experiment. Four types of rice registered an estimated output of between 6,480 to 9,300 kg per hectare, Qingdao Saline-Alkali Tolerant Rice Research and Development Center announced on September 28.
In spring, more than 200 types of rice were planted in Qingdao, east China’s Shandong Province. Scientists used diluted sea water in the soil to test which types could survive and prosper in saline environments. Vast farmlands with saline-alkali soil in China are expected to produce quality rice in the near future.
Yuan, 87, is known as China’s “Father of Hybrid Rice” for his contribution to developing new hybrid rice types, which have significantly improved rice quality and increased grain yield. Yuan became a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995, and he won the top national award for scientists in 2000.
In October, 2016, Yuan helped found the Qingdao center and organized a group of scientists to carry out the experiment to develop commercially viable rice tolerant of saline and alkali soil.
  Meaningless Race
  Qianjiang Evening News September 29
Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, announced a plan to build a 677-meter-high skyscraper on September 26. The planned project will become the tallest building in China, surpassing the 636-meter-high one under construction in Wuhan, central China’s Hubei Province.
In recent years, many Chinese cities have announced plans to build a super skyscraper. In 2014, Suzhou began to construct a 598-meterhigh building which will integrate offi ce space, a hotel, a shopping mall and tourism facilities into one complex. The construction is due to complete in 2020. In September 2015, a 596.5-meter-high building was completed in Tianjin and became the tallest building in China. But the record won’t be kept long, as the super skyscraper in Wuhan is scheduled to complete in 2018.
The race of building the tallest skyscraper among cities has caused a debate. To struggle for the fame of the tallest building, some property developers have made changes to original designs and increased height. This could cause fi nancial problems and even lead to bankruptcy of the project at last.
Actually, many developers seek higher plot ratios in real-estate development, or higher economic benefits. But a high plot ratio makes residential density high and brings less comfort for residents and users. Also, it may cause a large number of units to lie idle. Furthermore, the super skyscrapers face a number of challenges, including high cost of operation and safety problems. In urban development, Chinese property developers and municipal governments should be prudent to the game of height.
  Confi dence in Chinese Characters
  Oriental Outlook October 12
The crisis of Chinese characters is not an exaggeration. Since the TV program Chinese Characters Dictation Competition was aired in 2013, the topic has been under heated debate. Later, similar programs changed their focus from rarely used words to commonly used ones. Still, there are a lot of mistakes made by participants in writing characters.
The popularization of digital writing equipment is already an irreversible trend, and as a result, the habit of handwriting is undergoing subtle changes—more and more people fi nd they don’t remember how to write even common words.
Since digital input is gaining ground, why is the importance of standardizing Chinese characters writing repeatedly stressed? Characters are not only a tool of writing, but they also carry cultural information and keys to decoding the wisdom of ancient Chinese people, fully displaying the beauty of the Chinese culture.
The confidence of China ultimately comes from the confidence in the Chinese culture. If we are to sustain smooth heritage of Chinese characters amid digital expansion, the kind of cultural confidence embedded in these characters must be internalized in China’s elementary education.
Since September 1, newly-compiled Chinese textbooks have reversed the old way of teaching characters. Learning characters will come ahead of learning pinyin, a system of representing Chinese words in the Latin alphabet.
Today innovative designs centering on Chinese characters has stirred up the interest of many domestic designers. Chinese character-related designing and relevant products are becoming increasingly popular. To inherit Chinese characters on the basis of fully understanding their beauty and wisdom will in turn consolidate the confi dence in the Chinese culture.
  A Diverse Tourism
  People’s Daily October 9
For the eight-day “Golden Week” holiday of the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, a lot of people chose to go touring.
According to the National Tourism Administration, from October 1 to 7, various scenic spots received a total of 660 million tourists across China. Statistics reveal that in the fi rst half of this year, the per-capita expense on domestic tourism reached 855 yuan ($128.98), which accounts for 10 percent of the nation’s per-capita consumption expenditure. Nowadays, tourism has become more diverse.
Statistics show that 80 percent of the Chinese’s travelling is not for scenic spots. More people choose to stay in locals’ village houses instead of hotels. Tourism is no longer confi ned to visiting a scenic spot. Theme parks, museums and traditional culture streets have also seen an obvious growth in the number of visitors. Tourists pursue high quality and better experience in their trips.
Rapid expansion of China’s high-speed railway network makes it more convenient for people to reach famous scenic spots. Mobile payments and improved Internet services have also contributed to the booming tourism industry.
Today, Chinese tourists begin to pay more attention to the quality of their trips than before. The overall tourism environment should also catch up. Continuous efforts from both tourists and the industry will push China’s tourism to new heights.
  EXPELLED MEMBER OF POLITICAL BUREAU
Sun Zhengcai, former Secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has been expelled from the Party and dismissed from public offi ce for serious discipline violations.
The decision was made at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on September 29. The CPC Central Committee had removed Sun from his position as Chongqing Party chief on July 14 during an anti-corruption investigation.
The investigation conducted by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection found that Sun had seriously violated the Party code of conduct and rules. Sun was found guilty of nepotism and seeking benefi ts in selection of offi cials. He took advantage of his power to seek benefi ts for others, and took a huge amount of bribes in return.
Sun was born in 1963 in a coastal village in Shandong Province. He was elected as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in 2012 and took offi ce as Chongqing Party chief in November of the same year.
The case involving Sun’s suspected crimes will be transferred to the judiciary.
