王安忆小说《天香》展现了一个精巧富足的物质世界。通过对“物与人”关系的思考,表现了物性与人性的相通。物作为艺术的显现,与人的心灵气质之间相互观照。物性与人性的相通带来了晚明社会发展新的生机:一方面“天香园绣”艺术的成就表现了晚明女性独特的生命创造活力;另一方面,“天香园绣”的雅俗互动趋向象征晚明时期士绅家族命运的民间转向,暗示家族命运延续的另一种表现形态。小说对晚明社会“女性精神”和“民间生存智慧”的重新发现,表现了作者观照历史的独特视角和别具一格的艺术构思,为读者提供了一个阐释晚明上海图景的新角度。
