油封漏油是一个讨厌的问题。当我们分析了油封失效情况并查明其原因后,觉得需要有更充分的控制。早期的油封常用皮革、毛毡及其他吸湿性材料制造,容易吸收水份,结果造成轴的腐蚀。随着合成橡胶(例如丁腈橡胶,聚丙烯橡胶以及硅橡胶)的出现,产生了对评价这些材料密封特性用的设备的需要。为了改进油封的质量并建立质量控制的标准方法,通用汽车公司的研究室制订了一个油封基础研究以及质量控制和试验方法标准化的计划。
Oil seal leakage is a nasty problem. When we analyzed the failure of the oil seal and found out the reason, we felt that we needed more control. Early oil seals commonly used leather, felt and other hygroscopic materials, easy to absorb moisture, resulting in shaft corrosion. With the advent of synthetic rubbers such as nitrile rubbers, polypropylene rubbers, and silicone rubbers, there has been a need for equipment that evaluates the sealing properties of these materials. To improve the quality of oil seals and establish a standard method of quality control, GM’s lab developed a plan for basic research in oil seals and the standardization of quality control and test methods.
