中国古代很早就有了神话传说和对仙人世界的想象。它虚构的是一个神人之间的魔幻世界,幻想人可以通过修炼而得道成仙长生不死,或幻想死后仍可以通过升仙的方式而进入仙界得以永生,因而升仙也就成了人们向往的目标,这就产生了与神话相类的“仙话”。秦汉时期仙话的盛行,不仅与统治者的喜好与倡导有关,也与方士们的推波助澜大有关系。汉代是仙话泛滥的时代,对民俗民风和宗教、政治、文化、艺术等各个领域都产生了广泛而深刻的影响,也是绘画、雕塑、建筑、工艺等着意宣扬和表现的主题。仙话在汉代丧葬中成了不可缺少的重要内容,各地的墓主无不通过仙话来寄托死后升仙的愿望与向往,其表现形式大致可以归纳为五类,堪称丰富多样。
