In the spring of 1978, Carlos Kleiber rehearsed Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde” at the La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy. The whole process was extremely painstaking. The work has not been staged in a full thirteen performance season in Scala, and many young musicians in the orchestra have never even played the opera, but the theater has to answer Kleeber’s complete rehearsal of seventeen times.
