源于犍陀罗造像艺术的水波纹发髻佛像是外来佛教艺术中国化进程中发展、演变的成果之一,它形成于北魏文成帝复法之初的长安,与北方地区大乘佛教禅观思想也有一定关系。水波纹发髻佛像的区域性、阶段性分布特征充分体现和反映出中国南北朝时期佛教造像艺术的传播特点。它所蕴含的特性对于判断和分析北朝时期相关佛教造像的时代信息、风格源流等问题具有一定参考价值。
