The game has globalized overthe years and the Wizards alonehave players from Europe, and guysfrom all over the United States: theSouth, the North, the West Coastand the Midwest.
Some grew up in small, ruraltowns, while others were raised inbig cities. They all have their quirks, their locker room styles and theirway of relating to each other.
"This is what I love about thegame. The only thing that makes anNBA player an NBA player is thetalent," Tony Massenburg, who tiedan NBA record by playing for 12different teams, said.
"The game is just 450personalities at random. Basketballis really the only thing they have incommon at times.”
That extends off the floor aswell, to the locker room where, likeany workplace, there are rules.
An NBA locker room has alot of rules, actually, and many ofthem are not in writing. There is astrict code of do's and don'ts. And ifthere’s too many don’ts? Players saidthey’ll call out teammates withouthesitation. And even bring it up tomanagement.
RULE NO. 1: RESPECT EACH OTHER'SSPACE
Some of the rules of an NBAlocker room are obvious, or at leastthey should be obvious. Just becausesomething can be consideredcommon sense, doesn't meaneveryone understands before beingtold.
NBA players have tightquarters in locker rooms andespecially on the road. Some of theplayers are seven feet tall and havea designated area that spans onlyabout four feet wide.
They only get so much spaceand they are protective of it.
"You can't go into someone'slocker and grab some stuff becauseyou don't have it," Austin Riverssaid. "If you don't have lotion or youdon't have deodorant, don't go in mylocker and grab some stuff.”
RULE NO. 2: HYGIENE!
Depending on whom youask, hygiene is among the mostimportant rules in an NBA lockerroom. Some players enter theleague with the belief showeringand deodorant are optional.
"Not wanting to shower, that s*** happens a lot," MarkieffMorris said. "I had an incident whenI was in Phoenix with a rookie whosaid 'I don't use deodorant.' I waslike 'whoa, whoa, whoa; what thef*** do you mean you don't usedeodorant?’
"You've gotta respect otherplayers. Hygiene is one of the mostimportant things in our profession. It's uncomfortable guardingsomebody that stinks. That's whyI had to explain him 'like, bro, yousmell so it's uncomfortable for us tobe around you smelling like that.’"
RULE NO. 3: FOLLOW THE DRESSCODE
In the NBA, it's important todress properly, even en route to theshower. But for some in the lockerroom, that hasn’t always been a nobrainer.
This is where the mixing ofglobal cultures often comes intoplay.
"I had a guy who wore thisyellow, like bikini-style underwear.Guys were like 'yo, you can't.' Goget some [boxers]. Go to Lululemon, get some whatever, Polo, get somenormal underwear," one veteranrecalled.
One Wizards veteran recalleda story earlier in his career abouta new player who disrobed at hislocker, then walked through thecenter of the room with no clotheson to the shower. Later on, he hadto be pulled aside by a veteran whotold him that doesn't fly.
RULE NO. 4: CAREFUL WITH SIGNATURESHOES
One of the first rules offeredby many veterans involves signatureshoes. It is common in the NBAfor players to wear sneakers tied toanother player. For instance, PaulGeorge's Nike line is preferred bymany NBA players for its comfortand performance
But that dynamic changeswhen your team is going up againstthat player. If a Wizards playerwears Kevin Durant's shoes whenWashington is facing the Warriors, that will cross a line.
"You don't wear the signatureshoe of your opponent," Wizardspoint guard John Wall said.
Most NBA players understandthis rule, but many rookies have tolearn it, some the hard way. Wheninformed of the rule during trainingcamp, Wizards rookie Troy BrownJr. said it was news to him.
"I didn't know that was a rule,"he said, but added: "I kind of havemy own swag, anyway. I wouldn'twant to do that.”
RULE NO. 5: DON'T BREAK THECIRCLE OF TRUST
When players are talkingbehind closed doors, away from themedia, their families and coaches,no subject is off-limits. They talkeverything from NBA rumors, torelationships to politics. They tellstories, some of them not suitablefor print. But what is told in thelocker room must in almost everycircumstance stay in the lockerroom.
No matter how benign, whenstories get back around then trustcan be lost.
"Once your significant otherfinds out something about anotherplayer, then there's a variable inyour relationship that may or maynot apply to you some day, but itwasn't there until somebody toldthat story. It fuels paranoia," onelongtime NBA veteran said.
RULE NO. 6: NO RECORDING DEVICES
Locker room discussionsare intended to stay in the lockerroom and that is increasingly easiersaid than done with advancesin technology. Younger playersespecially are used to recordingeverything on their phones andtransmitting it through text messageand social media.
"I k now not to recordother guys when they talk aboutpersonal stuff. That was an issuein the league, obviously, so I'm notdoing that," Wizards point guardTomas Satoransky said, referringto a 2016 incident involving then-Lakers guard D'Angelo Russellsecretly filming a conversation withteammate Nick Young.
RULE NO. 7: DO YOUR ROOKIE DUTIES
Rookies on the Wizards haveto follow several traditions. Theyhave to get towels for the veteransafter games and practices on theroad. They have to bring food tothe plane for road trips and pick upmeals on off-days.
Wall has seen some veteransover the years demand specificslike early-morning donuts andnewspapers. Those deliveries, however, often come with tips.
The Wizards assign rookieschildren's backpacks at thebeginning of each year and, asDevin Robinson and ThomasBryant found out in September, they have to wear them all the wayup until Opening Night of theirsecond season. Some of them arepink, some of them have glitter;all of them stand out when wornby a gigantic professional athleteotherwise dressed to the nines inexpensive clothes.
Another rookie rule involvesthe timing of showers. Rookies notonly have to wait, but they better beusing that time for good.
"You never want to get intothe showers first. That's a rookierule. You've gotta be putting upextra shots," Wizards forward JasonSmith said. "You don't want to bethe first one out of the gym becausethen everybody thinks 'oh, he has iteasy' and then you're a target afterthat.”
RULE NO. 8: RESPECT YOUR VETERANS
One common complaint aboutrookies is their lack of deferenceto older players and often it can bethe littlest of things. They have todemonstrate an understanding oftheir place in the room. If a veteransenses any sort of entitlement, it canbe tough for the rookie to overcomethat perception.
"I didn't say s*** as a rookie,"Bradley Beal said. "I shut up, I satdown and I stayed at my locker. Ididn't speak. If somebody spoke tome, I would speak back, but thatwas it.”
RULE NO. 9: BE NICE TO THE STAFF
NBA players aren’t the onlyones in the locker room. NBAteams have massage therapists, equipment managers, publicrelations officials, assistant coachesand others. If any player doesn’t actappropriately to them? Jason Smithsaid he’ll call them out.
"You put a stop to that realquick because those are the peoplethat you're going to be travelingwith all year long," Smith said. "Youput them in their place and youmake sure they do things the rightway. That's part of being a veteran.”
RULE NO. 10: ENFORCEMENT
All of the rules stated aboveare unwritten. They aren't regulatedby the league or in a formal way bythe team. They are policed by theplayers.
Wall is known as a bit of alocker room cop. As a franchiseplayer and veteran, he has his rulesand wants you to abide by them.
"John is real tough on rookies,"Beal joked. "If you mess up or sayanything bad to him or say anythingnot on his side, John is going to letyou have it. He don't care.”
Much of the punishmentviolators receive is harmless. Wallsaid it takes a lot for him or anotherveteran to get really angry.
