为了充分发挥柴油机的动力性与经济性,延长其使用寿命,在运转时,必须保持冷却水温在一定的范围内。很多机车的说明书上都规定,作业中应经常保持柴油机水温在80~90℃之间。柴油机水温比较低的时候,缸壁的温度也就比较低,于是气缸里的水蒸气便凝结于缸壁上(1千克柴油燃烧后会产生出大于1千克的水蒸气)。柴油在气缸里燃烧时生成的另一些燃烧产物,遇到了冷凝于缸壁上的水,就会变成强烈的腐蚀剂(如亚硫酸)粘附在缸壁上,于是气缸壁就会受到强烈的腐蚀。
