铰刀用来铰制2~3级精度的孔,而2~3级精度孔的公差数值很小。所以,大量的铰刀常因其公差超出公差下限而报废。因此,为了延长铰刀的使用寿命,铰刀的直径都按最大尺寸设计和制造。尽管如此,这种决定铰刀直径的方法,还没有解决刀具的浪费问题。虽然可调式铰刀能解决此问题,但是对于较小直径的铰刀,尤其是使用在批量加工中,还是不适应的。采用冷挤压修复的方法,对铰刀的消耗量和降低刀具的成本具有一定的经济效果。
