The World Health Organization (WHO) Task Force on Extremely T-X-TB (XDR-TB) was held in Geneva from October 9 to October 10, 2006. It was recognized that the emergence of XDR-TB poses a serious threat to public health, HIV (HIV); and the panel also outlined a series of measures countries must take to effectively combat XDR-TB. In addition, thematic groups will help organize task forces to respond to national technical assistance requests and to dispatch them to XRT-TB risk areas within a short period of time. The meeting was so steep that the purpose was to review the current evidence on TB drug abuse, including its impact when it is linked to HIV. Dr. Anders Nordsträm, WHO Acting Director-General, emphasized at the panel meeting that WHO’s “strong commitment” is in various ways supporting national efforts to combat TB; it is crucial to take urgent measures to address the issue of XDR-TB, Especially in high HIV prevalence areas. In the meantime, WHO should not overlook the need for long-term improvements to strengthen tuberculosis control and build the health services necessary to respond to drug-resistant TB. The meeting called for countries to strengthen TB control - the key to preventing TB drug resistance - while agreeing on the definition of XDR-TB cases. In the context of HIV / AIDS pandemic, if there is a lack of close ties with tuberculosis and HIV programs and interventions
