我国最早的书籍,大都是用笔墨写在竹片或木片上的,因此与书籍制度有关的单字,从竹从片的特别多。古代书籍的材料是竹和木,具体地说,是截削成的狭长竹片和木片——写在竹片上的叫简,写在木片上的叫犊,合起来称简犊,有时也把竹制的和木制的通简为简。简一般指单独的竹片,如果指若干竹简连串在一起,就叫做策,后来也写作册,现今书籍以册计数即来源于此。
