资料显示,明初,南音在南洋华侨中,已有一定影响;近三四百年来,更成为东南亚普遍演唱的音乐。 第二次世界大战以前,新加坡“云庐”是研究南音的主要社团,拥有琵琶高手丁子汇、洞萧高手叶宏清、张孙滚等人。由于演出水平很高,经常产生轰动效应,吸引众多听众。弦友们以此筹款援助中国抗日战争,引起日本人的嫉恨,向英国殖民当局提出“抗议”,英国殖民政府屈服于日本压力,收回“云庐”准证。于是,弦友们于1940年另组湘灵音乐社。
