Heat, history and culture of the Hui ethnicgroup—those are the three thingsfirst coming to mind when I thinkof Xi’an, capital city of northwestChina’s Shaanxi Province. The Hui peopleare Xi’an’s native Muslim population.Although they are a minority in a city mostlypopulated by Han people, the Hui peoplehave one district distinctly their own: theMuslim Quarter. Like many Chinese cities,Xi’an is changing fast, with a constructionboom reshaping countless neighborhoods, but the Muslim Quarter remains resolutelyindividual, preserving its traditional atmospherein the middle of a metropolis.
