In February 1972, U.S. President Nixon visited China. This visit was called “Breaking the Ice” by the international media. At that time, as Deputy Director of the Press Division of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I participated in the reception of many U.S. journalists accompanying the delegation. Many of my experiences were unforgettable. Before Nixon’s visit to China, the White House press office in the United States proposed to me that there will be 1,000 U.S. reporters interviewed in China. At the time, this figure was staggering. We said no, even the hotel is not enough. Because at that time Beijing to receive foreign guests only Beijing Hotel, National Hotel and Xinqiao Hotel. The U.S. side asks: How about 800 people? We would not say it. Finally, both sides have a fixed number of 500. It is the first time for New China to receive so many foreign reporters in one go.
