在二十世纪中国绘画史上,黄胄以其杰出的人物画和动物画成就占据着突出的地位。实际上,黄胄的动物画成就丝毫都不逊色于其人物画。黄胄的动物画中最为人们熟知的是其水墨毛驴。黄胄画毛驴主要有三个方面原因:其一,其初衷本来是想以毛驴为突破点来锻炼笔墨,后来经过刻苦努力反而成为他最擅长、最拿手的绘画题材;其二是他年轻时期主要生活在中国西北地区,那里几乎家家户户养毛驴,长期耳闻目睹,便逐渐喜欢上了画毛驴;其三是受其老师赵望云的影响。
