Professor Uvar Doyle of the Institute of Medicine, Hebrew University of Israel, in collaboration with scientists at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem and the Rochester Pharmaceutical Company, discovered the biological mechanisms that promote beta-cell regeneration, a finding that has helped to develop a method for the treatment of type I Diabetes medicine. In the experiment, researchers destroyed 80% of insulin-producing cells in adult mice and showed symptoms of diabetes. Compared with control mice, glucose levels in the blood of diabetic mice increased significantly and a large number of new β cells were produced, indicating that glucose levels correlate with β cell regeneration. A further study found that a cell can sense glucose levels
