關於連珠體的起源,前人有始於戰國韓非之説。從體式上看,這樣説是有道理的。而連珠多用設譬類推的手法,則與古人在説理時的思維方式有密切關係。陸機《演連珠》的内容,多談論治國的道理、策略、方法,對於人主選拔任用人才尤爲關注。此外也有一般地談認識事物、處理事情的道理,談社會現象和人的性情的内容,雖不局限於政治,但是仍可看作是向人主貢獻意見,因爲人主要治理好國家,便應該了解和運用這些一般原理。這是繼承了諸子書論爲政與論君主修養相結合的傳統。其中論情與性之關係,頗值得留意。讀陸機《演連珠》,應注意其文章脈絡及其運用譬喻之富博和靈活多變,充分顯示的創新精神和才力。
