作者曾报道基因失能性1型单纯疙疹病毒（HSV－1）疫苗可保留其感染宿主细胞的能力，但在接种者体内不会传播，故可作为疫苗安全地使用，并可作直接粘膜接种。在此基础上，作者发展了一种缺乏感染性单周期HSV疫苗（DISC HSV－1），该病毒被去除了进入所需的主要糖蛋白（gH）的编码基因，它能完成一个完整的感染周期却不具有传染性。作者在豚鼠中观察了该疫苗的免疫效果。
