虽然火灾安全技术方面的大多数概念是建立在火灾基础研究积累的知识之上，但火灾基础研究的结果有时也会给出荒谬的估计。本文着重讨论火灾基础研究的功能。基本的火灾知识告诉我们，为防止火灾损失，迫切需要建立恰当的技术。作为典型的例子：立足于基础知识的主要部分，可尝试用富有见识性的解释阐述一小部分火灾现象。我们必须排除那些基础研究不能对火灾安全有所帮助的假定，而支持这样的政策，即为了发展减少火灾损失的未来技术，必须予基础研究以经费保证
Although most of the concepts of fire safety technology are based on the accumulated knowledge of fire basic research, the results of fire basic research sometimes give ridiculous estimates. This article focuses on the function of fire basic research. Basic fire knowledge tells us that in order to prevent fire damage, there is an urgent need to establish appropriate technologies. As a typical example: based on the main part of the basic knowledge, try to use a knowledgeable explanation to explain a small part of the fire phenomenon. We must exclude those assumptions that basic research can not help fire safety, and support the policy that in order to develop future technologies that reduce fire damage, basic research must be funded.
