The steel industry is a major player in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Although the energy efficiency of world-class iron and steel enterprises is already at a very high level, they can not meet the emission reduction targets under the existing energy saving policies. To achieve emission reduction targets must pass through the groundbreaking technological innovation. The European ultra-low CO2 steelmaking project (ULCOS) is a bold attempt to innovate, as detailed below. ULCOS proposes four solutions, three of which are based on an exclusive design of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), while the fourth is direct iron ore electrolysis. In addition, other important projects on emission reduction in the world are introduced, especially Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Taiwan. Finally, a new idea of the second generation emission reduction technology that combines ULCOS with other emission reduction projects (not the existing ones) is proposed.
