The research on Rio Tinto mainly focuses on the economic and political fields. So far, few studies have been conducted on the case from the media discourse of China and Australia. This paper uses “cultural centralism” as the main theory to compare the media discourse between China and Australia on the Rio Tinto espionage case. This article argues that the Australian media, represented by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian, expanded the negative impact of the economy in reporting the Rio Tinto espionage case, used pan-politicized expressions and strengthened cultural misreading , More violates the principle of “balanced” coverage. In addition, the study found that: Western scholars believe that the Chinese media coverage of the positive point is only one-sided. Both the Chinese state media such as the People’s Daily and the unofficial media such as Southern Weekend have shown their self-reflection, and the new media presents a multidimensional perspective. At the same time, there is also a problem in the Chinese media that the agenda setting lacks the initiative and the ability to respond is not strong. This study emphasizes the critical acceptance of western viewpoints and advocates that Chinese media should strengthen cross-cultural communication and enhance the persuasiveness of media discourse.
