鬼子中篇小说《苏通之死》采用后现代创作的元小说方式进行叙事,试图在虚构的小说世界中建立与现实的关系,参与现实对话,表现艺术与真实的契合,从而消解艺术和现实之间的界限,表征社会生活、人生境遇乃至艺术创作本身的悲剧性这一主题。鬼子通过元小说叙事的运用,使文本呈现开放性与统一性,让读者和作者本身反思社会和艺术创作问题,从而显现出创作上的范式意义及其人文思考的深度价值。
