１９２１年６月至１９２３年９月，马林作为共产国际驻华代表，在中国革命问题上，根据自己对中国时局的深入考察和以往在殖民地开展革命的成功经验，力排联吴联陈的倾向，首次提出国共合作的主张。进而他又积极推动国共合作的实现，他说服共产国际采纳并支持他的国共合作的建议，促使中国共产党接受和实行党内合作的形式，提议帮助孙中山改组国民党。所以，马林对于第一次国共合作，至关重要，功不可没。
