全國語文教学会議指示我們:小学低年級語文教學以識字为重點。这个方針是正確的,我坚决地拥護。有些语文教師问我,某一课文要教多少教时,我一定反問一句,生字多不多。有時我向他們建議多講些语文知识,他們說:生字多,教生字要占去很多時間,有的东西就沒時間講。他們把生字过多看成包袱。其他科教師也在埋怨:不但要教本科知识,还要教孩子認字。原來留級的、成績差的学生,多數因为識字太少,不能自学。生字問題几乎成为語文和其他各科教学成敗的关鍵問題。既然是問题,一定要解决。
