Evidence from previous studies suggests that SS-A (Ro) autoantibodies are closely associated with two different subtypes of Lupus Erythematosus (LE), subacute cutaneous leles (SCLE) and neonatal leles (NLE). Both subtypes of LE, skin involvement and photosensitivity are prominent and are highly correlated with serum SS-A (Ro) autoantibodies. The NLE model is useful for further understanding the significance of SS-A (Ro) autoantibodies in which mothers produce autoantibodies in the NLE that cause damage to the skin tissue in the infant through the placenta.
