A group of British biologists, in search of and developing a stimulant that is good for plant growth, extracted a substance from the alfalfa mold. When they tried to apply this substance to many kinds of plants, contrary to their original assumption, they not only failed to promote the growth of plants, but rather inhibited the growth of plants. However, they did not ignore this phenomenon because of their inconsistency with their expectations. Based on this clues, they found that the toxicity of this substance is more harmful to dicotyledonous plants, including most weeds, while it is less harmful to monocotyledons such as cereals. As a result, they invented highly selective and efficient herbicides of great agricultural value.
