Objective To evaluate the role of β-irradiation with a liquid 188Re-filled balloon for limiting neointimal proliferation. Methods Balloon-overstretched injury was performed in the rabbit carotid artery, then β-irradiation using the liquid 188Re-filled balloon was followed immediately, and the prescribed doses was 0, 15Gy or 20Gy at 0.5mm from the surface of vessel. All animals survived and were sacrificed at three weeks. Histopathologic analysis was performed. Results In the control group, the neointimal area was larger (0.40±0.04)mm 2, as compared with (0.23±0.06)mm 2 of the 15Gy irradiated group and (0.15±0.02)mm 2 in the 20Gy group (P<0.05). Conclusion The β-irradiation with a liquid 188Re-filled balloon is safe and effective.
