Through a series of experiences by his protagonist Luli, the author Coetzee shows that the white people in South Africa abolished all kinds of life dilemmas in the era of apartheid. And by the protagonist’s mouth, they expressed their criticisms of the modern system and the exploration and reflection on human nature. By analyzing and interpreting the living conditions of the characters in “Shame”, this paper attempts to explore the implicit thinking and questioning of human nature in the works, centering on the human instinct, revealing the dilemmas and struggles of modern people in diseased societies, With a view to exploring the author’s deep sympathy for human suffering.
