在管理学中,根据人们的需要是一个人产生动力的根本原因,需要使一个人产生欲望和动力,这种动力推动人产生某种行为而使需求得到满足。也就是需要→动机→行为→需要满足→新的需要。人们便提出了激励理论,所谓激励,就是通过科学的方法激发人的内在潜力,开发人的能力,充分发挥人的积极性和创造性。如马斯洛的需要等级理论、赫次伯格的双因素理论,弗鲁姆的激励的期望理论和麦和利兰的成就激励理论等。
