在替未被质疑和反思的本质主义文学观念信仰祛魅中,托尼·贝内特对马克思主义美学存在的合法性产生了怀疑。与此同时,随着对这些问题的深入探讨,一个更值得关注的问题是,贝内特为何从马克思主义文学批评家,转变为采用后马克思主义框架探讨问题的学者。其深层次讨论也必将涉及到另一问题:贝内特从葛兰西到福柯理论范式的转换,而且进一步把福柯的理论框架运用于具体的文化实践之中,从而揭示出当代社会中成为间接干预的“新自由主义”的政治图谋。但贝内特并没有批判这种社会现实,相反,他在很大程度上形成了与制度合谋的关系。
