Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus (MDMV) is composed of a virus strain closely related to sugarcane mosaic virus. MDMV has resulted in a significant reduction in maize in the United States and other temperate regions of the world. Transfection of MDMV resistance into certain maize hybrids significantly reduced the loss caused by MDMV infection. The disease resistance phenotype in maize is characterized by non-systemic symptoms. Although the genetic, biochemical, and physiological processes of resistance have been studied, genetic resistance to MDMV is poorly understood. Some disease-resistant genotypes show symptoms (ie, susceptible phenotypes) on a small proportion of inoculated plants. if
