Aristolochia is a bittersweet herbal medicine, which was originally found in China and was also referred to by the West as traditional Chinese medicine. It was popular in Europe in the early 1980s and early 1990s. In July 1999, British media reported that more than 100 patients had kidney disease caused by taking Chinese herbal medicine containing aristolochic acid. In July 2000, the U.S. (having not experienced similar poisoning incidents so far) local media are making a splash in Britain and Belgium.
