作为美国二十世纪初期著名的小说作家,舍伍德·安德森许多作品的写作思路都来源于生活,尤其表现出对工业文明冲击下的美国中西部乡村生活的关注,在对当时社会人们生存现状进行充分展现的同时,极为关注人们心理发展情况。可以说他的许多作品都是从心理角度对现代城市生活诸多怪诞的描写,极大地丰富了当时美国文学写作的题材。尤其是《小城畸人》的出版,更是在美国社会一时之间赢得了众多读者的青睐,成为了美国文坛的经典之作。该作品分别由二十五个独立成篇的故事共同组合而成,全面而细致地展现了社会经济发展变革背景下俄亥俄州地区一小镇居民在心理、思想上所产生的各种变化。同时,各个故事在保有自身情节完整性的同时,又与其他故事之间存在某种内在的关联性,从而在各个故事的相互影响和关联作用下,形成了一部内容完整、主题分明的作品。而人性当中的自我救赎,则成为了汇聚整部作品内容的主旨思想。本文以舍伍德·安德森代表作《小城畸人》为研究对象,就整部作品当中人物的自我救赎展开探究。希望借助以下研究和探讨,对我国文学界研究舍伍德·安德森作品内涵具有一定的借鉴意义。
As a famous novelist in the early twentieth century in the United States, many of Sherwood Anderson’s writing thoughts come from life. They especially show concern for the rural life in Midwest in the United States under the influence of industrial civilization. Fully demonstrated at the same time, is extremely concerned about people’s psychological development. It can be said that many of his works are from the psychological point of view of many modern city life grotesque description, which greatly enriched the theme of the American literary writing. In particular, the publication of “Tortoise” has won the favor of many readers in American society for a short while and has become a classic in the American literary world. The work consists of twenty-five separate articles combined together to comprehensively and carefully demonstrate the psychological and ideological changes in the small town of Ohio in the context of social and economic development and changes. At the same time, each story has some intrinsic connection with other stories while maintaining the integrity of its own story, so as to form a complete and well-defined work under the influence and association of various stories . Self-salvation in human nature has become the main idea of bringing together the contents of the entire work. In this paper, Sherwood Anderson’s masterpiece Tortoise is taken as the research object to explore the self-salvation of the characters in the whole work. I hope that with the help of the following research and discussion, it is of some reference to the study of Sherwood Andersen’s connotations in literary circles in our country.
