Because of its rich coal reserves, Britain has taken the lead in building a globally developed industrial system. However, the industrial sector, once associated with the coal industry, abandoned coal as it started to shrink or transition in the mid-to-late 1950s. When other industries and the coal industry are drifting away, the power generation industry has extended “a helping hand” to the coal industry. However, this supply-demand relationship has undergone major changes with the collapse of the established industrial system in the United Kingdom. The coal industry in Britain, depending on its own political forces, has tightly tied its development destiny to the power industry, resulting in a bundled parasitic relationship between the two. With Mrs. Thatcher’s deepening reform, this bundled parasitic relationship has been hit. The power industry eventually chose to compete in the market, whereas British coal only shrank step by step as demand fell.
