In recent years, the Japanese paint industry has been caught in the dilemma of both production and sales. Taking organic pigments as an example, the output in 2000 was 36,300 t. In 2001, it dropped to 34,300 t. The decline in the production of organic pigments was due to a decline in the demand for inks, coatings and polymer products and a significant drop in export volume. Although organic pigments have inferior weatherability and heat resistance to inorganic pigments, organic pigments will gradually replace inorganic pigments for safety reasons, and this trend will accelerate in the future. With the rapid decline in markets such as automobiles, home appliances, and residential materials, the demand for inorganic pigments in Japan is declining. Japan’s chemical industry, including the paint industry, currently has to implement a series of laws and regulations concerning environmental protection. Enterprises should give priority to the production of environmentally friendly and safe pigment products.
