主要探讨《发生认识论原理》中贯穿着的问题,即新认识的建构问题。皮亚杰一再强调,认识既不是起源于具有自我意识的主体,也不是起因于客观存在的客体,而是在主客体相互作用中发生、发展的。因此,需要弄清楚认识论上的主体和客体的概念以及它们的特征;其次,要知道皮亚杰是在“发生学”的基础上来探讨认识的建构问题,因此,必须从生物学方面来解释认识的建构——认识的生物发生,从三个观点介绍认识的生物发生。其中瓦丁顿的后成论,强调基因型与环境相互作用的理论与皮亚杰的发生认识论的认识结构的发生、发展,主体与客体相互作用中发展的之间很相似。因此,在此基础上皮亚杰提出了表现型复制理论。最后介绍了表现型复制理论,其中有表现型和表现型复制的概念,及表现型复制的过程和机制。
