In recent years, at a time when most Latin American countries experienced a serious economic crisis in the early 1980s and faltered on the path of economic growth, Chile’s economy has developed smoothly and has drawn the attention of the international financial institutions such as the World Bank. Since 1984, the Chilean economy has achieved overall growth for five consecutive years. From 1986 to 1988, the Chilean economy had been growing at a rate of about 6% per annum, with an increase of 6.8% in 1988 in gross domestic product, in stark contrast to the average of 0.7% in Latin America.
