平和县人口52.8万人,总面积2326.8平方公里,设16个乡镇(场)、240个行政村、18个居委会、12个作业区,具有“老、特、边、山、贫”5个特点。老,即革命老区。平和县是革命的“红土地”,老区乡镇占75％。70年前,闽西南农民武装斗争领导人朱积垒发起的平和暴动,是“福建暴动的先声”,朱德、邓子恢等老一辈革命家曾在平和留下了光辉的足迹。特,即人文旅游资源独特。平和是福建省重点侨乡和台湾同胞的主要祖籍地,是台湾“阿里山忠王”吴凤、油画家周碧初和文学家林语堂的故里,有名闻遐迩的闽南佛教圣地——三平寺、享誉闽南第一山的“灵通岩”。边,即为闽粤重点边区,与粤东北接壤,是我省的南大门之一。山,即沿海山区县。山地占全县土地面积的88％,位居漳州市各县之首。贫,即为漳州市唯一的省定贫困县。经济起步晚,基础薄弱,贫困面大。
