The main advantage of the powder metallurgy process of aluminum and titanium has been the recent reduction of costs. However, recent studies have demonstrated that liquid rapid cooling can improve the mechanical properties of both types of light alloys, and for aluminum rapid solidification processes can produce alloys with improved mechanical and corrosion resistance. For titanium, in some conventional alloys like Ti-6Al-4V, the rapid solidification process improves performance and produces high temperature and high strength alloys. F.H.Froes of the United States Air Force’s Materials Laboratory at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, describes the technical status and development plans for both types of alloys below.
