将小说创作放在整个文化历史长河中作纵向剖析,会发现中国人的固有的思维模式已造成对中国小说创作的极大影响和束缚:中国男人的双重感觉带来的是小说总体上的阴柔有余阳刚不足;不敢正视悲剧的心态使作家们回避冲突,缺乏深层次的挖掘;过分的崇尚事实,追源求本几乎扼杀了小说最根本的特点──虚构;而作家们对传统道德的既爱又怕的矛盾心理又使小说逃离了浪漫……这种思维模式导致作家放弃对生命本源的探索,取消对未来大胆的追求,其最终的恶果是导致艺术创作力的平板和萎缩。
