80年代以来,随着广州城市建设的加速推进,处于城区边缘的城郊结合部农村土地被大量征用,农民得到了数额可观的征地补偿款。据调查,每次征地每个村民均可获得5至30万元的征地补偿款。同时各村有一些集体企业和土地出租收益,年终每个村民还可获得几千元甚至上万元的分红,广州外来人口数量很大,许多村民在自己的宅基地加盖房屋,出租给外来人居住,征地补偿款、分红和房租收入使得城郊结合部的农民收入远远超过市区职工的收入。
