早期放射性现象研究中,人们曾观察到某些无机盐类溶液在放射线照射下,会出现一种微弱的蓝白色闪光,当时人们认为这是一种荧光现象。1934年切伦柯夫等在实验和研究中也发现一些液体在γ射线的作用下也会产生发光现象,但光强度较弱,呈淡蓝紫色且具有连续光谱的性质。经进一步研究表明它不是荧光而是一种新的辐射。后称之为切伦柯夫辐射(Cerenov Radiation)。随之对此辐射现象提出了理论上的解释。指出
